| Joel
has been taking photographs since his pre-teen days, when
he received his first camera - a Kodak Instamatic. His
next camera was quite a jump from there - a hand-me-down
Argus 35mm. It was completely manual and forced Joel to
learn a thing or two about the fundamentals of photography.
By the time he reached high school, Joel had gone through
a number of second-hand 35mm cameras before getting a
brand new SLR outfit with all the bells and whistles.
His continued quest to learn more about photography led
him to join his school's photography club, where he began
to explore the darkroom. In the early 90s Joel began to
experiment with digital photography and he quickly embraced
the technology and grew with it over the next 10 years.
Today, Joel works strictly in digital
photography. He prefers the instant gratification and
the complete control over his work - as both a photographer
and an artist - that this technology offers. More recently,
he's honed his "digital darkroom" skills and
frequently employs various digital techniques to transform
his photographs into "painterly" scenes, which
he calls "photographic art."
Joel was born and raised on the
Lower East Side and still makes it his home today.
