I am a big fan of 169 Bar and here?s why: there is a LAWYER sign hanging above the entrance and yet there is no lawyer. Ha! This is funny!

In addition, there is a scarcity of sitting space and the one vinyl couch by the window is eaten with holes. Something tells me we?re not on Orchard Street anymore. We?re on East Broadway! 169 East Broadway, between Rutgers and Jefferson. The kind of street that is flanked by a square- Straus Square- and young Chinese babes in flashing tennis shoes and an old woman who tells me I?d be safer not to wander. Fabulous! This is just the kind of street for a colonial-looking bar with a nonexistent LAWYER.

Around since the 50s (nicknamed the ?Bloody Bucket? for its bar brawls) and in operation under a different name since 1926, 169 Bar has the down-home sparseness that its name would suggest. Yet the reason for the grandly empty space in the center is clearance for local bands (bluegrass on Monday, Glam! on Tuesday, rock every other day of the week) and the spurts of soft pink light and the few dreary votives don?t mean that this gritty, East Broadway hole-in-the-wall isn?t safe from Orchard-style gentrifying. But 169 Bar staves off the inevitable with an incongruous signpost and an awesomely solitary pool table.
